Myths and Fairy Tales for Piano Four Hands

Lori Cruciani and Namji Kim, piano

The UWL Department of Music will present “Myths and Fairy Tales for Piano Four Hands” featuring pianists Lori Cruciani and Namji Kim in concert. The recital will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1 in Annett Recital Hall, Lowe Center for the Arts, and is free and open to the public.

This imaginative program explores mythological and literary storytelling through the rich tradition of piano four-hands performance, inviting audiences into a world of fantasy, folklore, and lyrical expression.

The recital opens with Six épigraphes antiques by Claude Debussy, a series of atmospheric miniatures inspired by ancient Greek poetry and mythology. The work evokes scenes of gods, rituals, and natural forces through subtle color and texture.

Also featured is the Barcarolle from Six Pieces, Op. 11 by Sergei Rachmaninoff, a lyrical and flowing work that highlights the expressive potential of two pianists at one instrument.

After intermission, the program continues with Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) by Maurice Ravel, a beloved suite depicting fairy-tale characters including Sleeping Beauty, Little Tom Thumb, and Beauty and the Beast.

The evening concludes with Dolly by Gabriel Fauré, a charming set of short pieces originally written for a child and filled with warmth, humor, and elegance.

Together, these works span the late Romantic and early modern eras, offering audiences a vivid musical journey through myth, imagination, and storytelling.

Lori Cruciani and Namji Kim are active performers and educators known for their collaborative artistry and commitment to musical excellence. Their partnership highlights the unique intimacy and coordination required in piano four-hands performance, bringing clarity and expressiveness to this specialized repertoire.

“Myths and Fairy Tales for Piano Four Hands” reflects the Music Department’s commitment to presenting high-quality performances that connect classical music to broader cultural and literary traditions.

The concert is free and open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend.
