Free Speech, Polarization, and Public Accountability

Featured Public Event: Free Speech & Civic Courage with Dr. Jason M. Williams and Dr. Michael Bitzer 

This event is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Join UW-La Crosse for a featured Free Speech Week conversation with Dr. Jason M. Williams and Dr. Michael Bitzer on free speech, civic courage, public accountability, polarization, democratic participation, and the skills needed to engage difficult public conversations.

This moderated conversation will bring together two scholars and public educators with  complementary areas of expertise. Dr. Williams brings a focus on justice, advocacy, accountability, and community engagement, while Dr. Bitzer brings a data-informed perspective on polarization, depolarization, civic participation, and democratic conversation.

This 90-minute public event will be structured as a facilitated conversation with time for reflection and audience engagement. Participants will be invited to consider how free speech shapes public life, how communities can engage disagreement with greater care and courage, and why civic participation requires both speaking up and listening well.
