UWL Celebrates: Hispanic Heritage Month

Couch Conversation with Dr. Omar Granados

This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Omar Granados is an Associate Professor in Global Cultures & Languages at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Director of UWL’s Institute for Latin American and Latino Studies. Raised in Havana, Cuba, Omar earned his Ph.D. in Latin American Literatures and Cultures from Emory University and brings interests in migration, collective memory, public scholarship, Caribbean studies, film, and Latino cultural studies to his teaching and research. At UWL, he teaches courses exploring Latin American history, literature, film, migration, Latino communities in the United States, and the Hispanic Caribbean.

His scholarship has also explored Cuban migration and the 1980 Mariel Exodus, including the experiences of Cuban refugees housed at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Through teaching, research, and community engagement, Omar’s work connects history and culture with contemporary questions of identity, migration, memory, and belonging.
