UWL Celebrates: LGBTQ+ History Month

Couch Conversation with Will Van Roosenbeek

This event is free and open to the public. 

Willem “Will” Van Roosenbeek is the Student Affairs Director for LGBTQA Services at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a two-time UWL alumnus, earning his bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation in 1992 and his master’s degree in College Student Personnel in 1997. He has led LGBTQ+ programs and services at UWL for more than two decades, supporting students, educating campus and community members, and helping build spaces where LGBTQ+ people can find connection and belonging. His areas of expertise include LGBTQ+ education, transgender identity and experience, inclusive workplaces, and LGBTQ+ experiences in health care.  

Will is a first-generation college graduate and transgender man whose own journey has been closely connected to UWL and the La Crosse community. His community leadership has also included work with local LGBTQ+ organizations, Habitat for Humanity, the city's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, and the City of La Crosse Human Rights Commission. 

His story also reaches into La Crosse’s LGBTQ+ history. Will has spoken about finding community at Rainbow Revolution Bookstore in the 1990s while navigating his own identity, describing the importance of spaces where LGBTQ+ people could find information, connection, and one another before those resources were easily available online.
