Rock Art's Unique Window into Past Lifeways

From Northern Brazil to Southern Minnesota

Dr. Constance Arzigian will share rock art from two lesser-known locations (Serra da Capivara, Brazil, and Jeffers Petroglyphs, Minnesota) that both feature lively images of daily life. 

For over 10 millennia, Serra da Capivara artists drew thousands of images along the rock faces of their homes in the arid landscape of northern Brazil, celebrating all aspects of their lives: dancing, acrobatics, hunting, family life, and local animals and plants. Four thousand miles to the north, the artists at Jeffers Petroglyphs, Minnesota, expended great effort pecking over 10,000 images into solid bedrock, capturing hunts, ceremonies, families, animals that shared the land, and much more. At Jeffers, descendants of those artists have contributed their perspectives on this 7,000-year cultural history for the site's interpretative information. These two sites--set in such vastly different landscapes and histories--offer uniquely personal, visual links to the past that no collection of handheld artifacts can provide.
