National Coming Out Day

Celebrate with RU, Transform, & the Pride Center!

National Coming Out Day was founded in 1988 by psychologists and activists Rob Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. The date commemorates the second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights held in 1987. The founders believed that homophobia thrives in silence, and knowing someone who is LGBTQ+ helps dismantle prejudice.

We celebrate the day to encourage openness as a basic, powerful form of activism. We offer a space and shared solidarity for queer and trans individuals on their own terms and timelines. We want to support our friends and family who have come out. We encourage medical and mental health support.

This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff.  The Pride Center, an entity associated with the Division of Access, Belonging, and Student Engagement at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, sponsors this event. As such, all identities - no matter their race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, protected class, or viewpoint are welcome to attend this event. 

ABSE and the Pride Center encourage participants to review the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's civil discourse discussion agreement. These discussion principles can guide attendees as they consider their level of engagement during this event.
