'Is the expansion of the universe accelerating?' was topic of Nobel Prize winner's public lecture

[caption id="attachment_36700" align="alignnone" width="770"]Photo of Riess presenting. Nobel Laureate Adam Riess quoted Sheldon Cooper of "The Big Bang Theory" to emphasize how nebulous the study of physics sometimes seems. "Look at these men," said Sheldon in one episode. "They've managed to win the top science prize in the world with no more understanding of the quantum underpinnings of the expansion of the early universe than God gave a goose." See more photos of the public lecture at http://goo.gl/2I3CzD.[/caption]
More than 350 attended the public lecture Nobel Prize Winner in Physics Adam Riess gave Oct. 2 in UW-L's Centennial Hall. Riess described how his team studied several dozen exploding stars to reveal the acceleration of the universe. Riess’ discovery implies that the universe is being pushed apart by an unknown dark energy embedded in the fabric of space. Understanding the nature of dark energy presents one of the greatest remaining challenges in astrophysics and cosmology, he noted. Riess is the 15th Nobel Prize Winner in Physics to speak at UW-L as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series in Physics. Each year the series brings a world-renowned physicist to La Crosse whose significant accomplishments and communication skills can inspire and enrich the careers of students, faculty and others. UW-L is ranked No. 2 in the nation for the number of physics degrees it awards annually among bachelor’s degree granting programs. Find out more about UW-L's Physics Department.

UW-L improves storm water quality

Actions taken by Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) have improved the quality of UW-L’s storm water runoff and UW-L is in full compliance with U.S. EPA and WI DNR storm water requirements. This accomplishment is primarily attributable to installation of catch basins, bioinfiltration basins and other storm water management technologies. Storm water is rain or snow melt which runs off the land or hard surfaces like roads, roofs and parking lots into a river, marsh or other waterway.  Storm water can carry with it fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste, grass clippings and other pollutants.  Once in the storm water, these pollutants can harm the natural environment. FP&M will continue taking actions that improve storm water quality, but in the end, water quality on campus and in the region can only be protected and improved with the help of the campus community. Read and employ techniques described in UW-L's "Doing Your Part" guidelines.  Every person making an active commitment to environmental sustainability makes a difference. As part of FP&M’s commitment to sustainability, documents related to UW-L’s Storm Water Management commitment are available at www.uwlax.edu/ehs/storm_water.htm. For additional information related to UW-L’s storm water pollution prevention program, or to report one-time or ongoing issues that could negatively impact storm water quality, contact Environmental Health and Safety or call 608.785.6800.

DiningServicesWEB What’s Happening In Dining Services — By Registered Dietitian Katie Callahan Exercise and nutrition At the beginning of the school year, I conducted a survey among UW-L students to see what nutrition programming would be of greatest interest. A large majority of the responses related to exercise and nutrition. I hope this article answers a couple of the questions you may have about this popular topic. Oftentimes, many people think of exercise and nutrition and think of one word — protein. The role of protein in exercise is to aid with muscle growth and repair. There are a variety of approved (and non-approved) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supplements on the market that range from protein powders, shakes and drinks. While these products can be convenient and full of good quality protein, numerous studies have found that most people, even athletes, can get all the protein they need from eating sources of lean protein such as meat, fish, chicken and dairy products. Also, whole food products are generally less expensive than supplements. What constitutes a good meal for a physically active individual? Research suggests that 20-25 grams of protein (a 3-ounce chicken breast) and about 20-25 grams of carbohydrates (one cup of chocolate milk) should be included at a meal. Carbohydrates are important to include in order to refill energy, or glycogen, stores. It is also important to have some fruits and vegetables included in the meal to reduce any possible inflammation in the body. Good snack choices pre-and post-exercise include some sort of protein along with some carbohydrates. Examples include an apple or banana with nut butter, fruit and cottage cheese, and a whole wheat pita with hummus. For specific exercise and nutrition questions, email kcallahan@uwlax.edu or stop by the dietitian office in Whitney Center. Note: Registered Dietitian Katie Callahan is available to do presentations nutrition-related topics.
