Feb. 1 marked Chancellor Joe Gow's sixth year as chancellor at UW-L.
Gow is most excited about continuing construction projects to update campus buildings, he says.
Currently, there's the construction of a new parking ramp near La Crosse Street. Projects in the queue include an updated science building and student center, and potentially another residence hall. He notes his pride in the construction of Eagle and Centennial halls, both focusing around eco-sustainability.
Direct involvement in major decisions is one of the many advantages Gow sees for students at UW-L. UW-L students never spend their money on a new project without consent through a diplomatic process, he notes. This process was exercised when students voted to begin construction of a new student center next year instead of revamping Cartwright Center, which was originally constructed in 1959.
One of the plusses for Gow at UW-L is being in classrooms and interacting with students and staff. "I love my job here. I love being in the classroom. I couldn't do that in Madison,” he says.
One of the continuing challenges Gow says is a decreasing budget, not just in the last four years but over decades. A total freeze in faculty salaries has been hard to understand, Gow says, and he's thankful talented staff remain committed to UW-L.
“Our people don’t put on airs about all of their awards and accomplishments. Everyone stays down to earth while continuing to do remarkable things, every day,” Gow notes.
