UW-L jazz ensemble sets coffee house performance

UW-La Crosse’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble I will take its spring performance across the street to a coffee house.   UW-L to recognize distinguished alumni, students Four of UW-L's top alumni for 2011, along with the university’s top graduating seniors and retiring employees, will be honored during an Alumni Awards & Reception Friday, May 13, at the UW-L Cleary Alumni & Friends Center.  

NSF awards UW-La Crosse $248K

A $248,446 grant will help UW-L undergraduates and area high school students conduct more research on bacterial infections and diseases that affect neurons in the body.

UW-L Professor Emeritus is finalist for best biography

The Society of Midland Authors has chosen a book written by UW-La Crosse History Professor Emeritus Bruce L. Mouser as a finalist in the biography category of its annual Author Awards.  

Signs say job market may be looking up for May grads

Early signs indicate the career outlook for this year’s graduating class is better than the last. Nationally employers plan to hire 19 percent more new college graduates this year than they did last year, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).  

Morrison retires after 40-year teaching career

When UW-La Crosse students start out in Senior Lecturer Dianne Morrison’s finance classes, they wonder if she’s speaking a foreign language. Dung Ngo to give farewell lecture May 13

[/caption] Dung Ngo is leaving UW-L for a faculty position in clinical psychology at the University of Texas at Tyler. Before he goes, he will present a lecture on his life. The free lecture, "My Life," is set for 3-4 p.m. Friday, May 13, in 247 Graff Main Hall. At the age of 14, in 1979 Ngo fled Vietnam in a small boat with 48 other people including four members of his family.  He will share his experience as a “boat person” and his life in America. He'll also discuss perspectives on his journey and what it has meant to him.  

Deadline to order printing with FY11 monies is May 13

The last day departments can submit printing purchase order requests using FY11 monies is Friday, May 13. The process of placing print orders through state contracts requires extra time. Those who need artwork designed should contact the Publications Office at 785.8575 or 785.8499 immediately. After May 13, printing requests will be held for processing until July 1. However, the Publications Office is available in June to design projects for the upcoming fiscal year. Refer questions regarding printing needs to the Publications Office.  

Deadline to submit purchase requisitions with FY11 monies is May 20

Friday, May 20, is the last day to submit routine purchase requisitions to Purchasing with fiscal year 2011 funds. Allow extra time for purchases of more than $25,000, which require sealed bids. Greg Devine retirement social set for May 11

A retirement social for Greg Devine, Campus Stores, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Physical Plant. Everyone is  welcome to attend. Devine worked at UW-L for more than 27 years.  

Linguistics reading group to be held weekly beginning fall semester

A linguistics reading group will meet at noon on Thursdays beginning the second week of fall classes. Those interested in participating are encouraged to bring a lunch to the "Brown Bag" informal meeting. The group will read an article weekly to discuss. Heating Plant shutdown set for May 14-22

The Heating Plant will be shut down for scheduled maintenance and repairs beginning 6 p.m. Saturday, May 14, until 10 p.m. Sunday, May 22. During the shutdown there will be no steam distribution services available to campus buildings. Cage washers, autoclaves and other steam supplied equipment will be affected. Plan accordingly in anticipation of the shutdown. For more information, contact Heating Plant Superintendent Timothy Merrell at 785.8710.  

Altra Safety and Shred fest slated for May 21

Bring up to 100 lbs (about two large trash bags) of paper items and watch them get shredded for free from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 21, at the Altra Federal Credit Union, 2715 Losey Blvd. S. Paper and file folders can be shredded with no need to remove staples, rubber bands or paper clips. Food items, three-ring binders, plastic or foam packing materials are not allowed. This year, in addition to the free on-site shredding, La Crosse Area Crime Stoppers will be available to answer questions, and Gundersen Lutheran Safe Kids program will be on-site doing child safety car seat checks. For more information, call 787.4500.   Campus Kudos artwork. Mark W. Chavalas, History, contributed to J. Walton, ed., "The Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary: Old Testament," five volumes, (Grand Rapids: Zondervans, 2009), which was the winner of the 2011 Christian Book Award in the category of Bible Reference . Rob Dixon, Psychology, was elected at a statewide election in January to serve a three-year term beginning July 2011 as Wisconsin's representative to the National Association of School Psychologists. Natalie Eschenbaum, English, presented “Sex, Sense, and Reason in A Midsummer Night's Dream” at the 39th Annual Meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America held April 7-9 in Bellevue, Wash. Student Janelle Hammond, with direction from faculty mentor Susan Kelly, Mathematics, presented "Music and Mathematics" at the 79th Annual Wisconsin Sectional Meeting of the Mathematical Society of America April 29 at UW-Stout. Jim Jorstad, Academic Technologies/ITS, debuted the film "To Empower with Technology" for the opening session for the EDUCAUSE Midwest Regional Conference March 14-16 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago. The film features UW-L students and how they view and use social networking, rich media and general technology in their academic and daily lives. 'Finding Balance: A Mini-Retreat for Caregivers' to be held June 15

"Finding Balance: A Mini-Retreat for Caregivers" will be held from 12:30-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the Hmong Cultural and Community Center, 1815 Ward Ave. Featured presentations and presenters are:
  • "Finding Humor Along the Journey," Art Peek
  • "Balancing Health,"  Dr. Bee Lo, ND
  • "Caregiving and Resiliency," Elizabeth Duncanson
The event also includes mini massages, Hmong fabric arts, therapy dogs and food sampling sessions. Cost is $10 for family caregivers and $20 for professional caregivers. Refreshments and materials are included. Respite Care is available during the program at no cost by La Crosse County Aging Unit. Kids Culinary Academy on campus in July

At Kids Culinary Academy, executive chefs and registered dietician inspire students entering sixth through eighth grades six through to create tasty delights, sumptuous delicacies and extraordinary dishes. While learning food preparation skills is the main ingredient at the Culinary Academy, each session adds a heap of kitchen safety, a scoop of etiquette, a handful of table setting, a pinch of menu planning, and laughter to taste. Students' final culminating activity is a dinner prepared for their families. At Kids Culinary Academy, imaginations are free to run wild as kids discover math, reading, health, time management, food chemistry and social skills through our hands-on cooking camp. Kids Culinary Academy offers two sessions in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. Choose from either 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, July 19-20, or July 26-27. A $140-fee includes diploma, personalized apron, chef hat, lunches, snacks and dinner for four individuals. Additional dinner guests are welcome at $10 per person.
