Students see some incredible sights while traveling the world. Now they’re sharing that vision through the first-ever study abroad photo contest.
Students see some incredible sights while traveling the world through UW-L Study Abroad experiences. Now they’re sharing that vision through the first-ever study abroad photo contest.
Three winners were selected spring semester with first place going to student Kaitlin Cullen who captured a picturesque view of Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, in Patagonia, Chile. Second place and third place went to students Alec Fitzsimmons and Evan Zachmann, respectively.
More than 50 photos were entered into the contest from students’ study abroad experiences past and present. People voted on the images via the Study Abroad Facebook page. Students with the top three highest combined votes won. Winners received gift cards.
The photo contest promotes study abroad and international opportunities through UW-L, notes Kabee Vue, UW-L study abroad adviser. It also provides a look into life abroad for those who aren’t able to go.
“There is a realization that not every student participates on a study abroad experience, so we wanted our current UW-L students to showcase or highlight the people, places and environments that they encountered while studying abroad,” says Vue.
The office plans to continue the photo contest next year.
Winners:
First Place Winner Kaitlin Cullen, biology and Spanish major.
Kaitlin’s photo was taken at the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, in Patagonia, Chile. Cullen was on a semester-long study abroad program in Valparaiso, Chile, through UW-L’s study abroad partner, Academic Programs International (API).
Second Place Winner: Alec Fitzsimmons, biomedical science major with minors in chemistry and nutrition.
Fitzsimmons’ photo of the Kenyan child was taken in Kenya while he was participating on the Kenya Make a Difference service-learning program during the winter intersession. Fitzsimmons also participated on a faculty-led program to India while at UW-L.
Third Place Winner: Evan Zachmann, marketing major with a minor in recreation management
