The UW-L Department of Theatre Arts presents its 2015-16 season. Early bird season tickets are on sale now through July 14, 2015. See details below.

“Proof”

Opening the 2015-2016 season is David Auburn’s “Proof,” a work that explores the mystery of love and of science. It focuses on Catherine, a young woman who is strongly devoted to her father; Robert, a brilliant and well-known mathematician whose grip on reality is beginning to slip. As Robert descends into madness, Catherine begins to wonder if she may have inherited her father’s mental illness along with his mathematical genius. When Robert’s work reveals a mathematical proof of potentially historic proportions, it sets off shock waves in more ways than one. Proof considers not only the unpredictability of genius, but also the human instinct toward love and trust.

“A Street Car Named Desire”

Next up is Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Streetcar tells the tragic story of fragile former schoolteacher, Blanche, who leaves the family plantation house and moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella, and Stella’s animalistic husband, Stanley. She quickly gets a gritty life lesson in the seamy, steamy underbelly of 1940s life in the French Quarter. Temperaments clash, fireworks fly and secrets are revealed in this classic drama.

“Singin’ in the Rain”

Get ready for a downpour of unforgettable songs in “Singin’ in the Rain.” Singin’ in the Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline — the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers. In silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item, but behind the scenes things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen. Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her. This spectacular show is packed full of charm, romance, comedy and Tinseltown glamour and features some of the best loved movie songs including “Good Morning,” “Make ‘em Laugh” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”

“One Man, Two Guvnors”

Roar with pleasure at the worldwide smash hit “One Man, Two Guvnors.” Set in 1963 Brighton, this marvelously crafted show abounds with a unique blend of satire, slapstick, and sparkling wit that will make you feel splendidly silly. Meet a parade of colorful characters and see our hapless hero, Francis Henshall, juggle two jobs and two bosses. Join Francis in the fun as he leads you through this topsy-turvy world of love triangles and mistaken identities.

Kinesis Dance

The season closes out with the return of Kinesis Dance Theatre featuring several UW-L dance students and led by choreographer Kathy Gorman. Kinesis includes a wide variety of dance styles including tap, jazz, modern and ballet culminating in a one-of-a-kind performance.

Frederick Theatre productions

The UW-L Theatre Department will also present two Frederick Theatre productions, including Wisconsin native Neil Haven’s “Come Back” and the children’s tale “Horrible Harry in 2B.”

“Come Back” takes a gritty look at grief while daring the audience not to fall out of their seats with laughter. Sky, a mild-mannered graphic designer prone to anxiety attacks, is compelled to trek across the country “with an elderly parrot and his friend in a bucket.” Sky’s closest friend, a bird rehabber named Erin, recently succumbed to cancer and left a surprise in her will: Sky is responsible for choosing what to do with her remains. Before she died, Erin planned a road trip, which delivers Sky to all of the unconventional places and people that will do something kooky with one’s cremains. From infused bullets to a launch in low orbit, Sky must choose the most fitting final resting place for his lost companion. Erin thoroughly attended to every detail of the journey, but forgot to consider one factor: her mother. Val would much prefer her daughter be interred in the extensive family cemetery plot. Val tracks down Sky and joins him on the trip, hoping to sway his opinion toward the traditional burial choice. Coupled oddly, they embark on a journey in Erin’s memory to explore grief, death, souls and soul mates.

The UW-L annual children’s production is the mischievous tale “Horrible Harry in 2B.” Based on the book series by Suzy Kline, the UW-L Department of Theatre Arts’ Creating Children’s Theatre class reviewed several Horrible Harry stories and wrote the original script. Horrible Harry makes second grade really exciting. But, as Doug knows, being his best friend isn’t always easy. Harry likes gross things and causing trouble like scaring Song Lee with his pet snake or pouring ice cold water down Sydney’s back. With Harry, you never know what is going to happen next.

Please note: “Come Back” and “Horrible Harry in 2B” are not part of the season subscription package.Theatre productions and schedule subject to change.
