The UW-La Crosse Jazz Studies Program presents its final big band concert of the 2014–15 season April 19.
The UW-La Crosse Jazz Studies Program presents its final big band concert of the 2014–15 season at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The concert, part of Jazz Appreciation Month, is free.
The UW-L Jazz Ensemble will open the concert with selections ranging from Count Basie’s “Vine Street Rumble” to Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” “Riverscapes,” written by Fred Sturm, will feature Jordan Stokka, piano, and Susan Haack, alto saxophone. The band will also feature Lyn Olson, drums, from La Crescent and Tom Jenson, trombone, of Onalaska on “Ol’ Man River.” Both students are finishing their first year in the UW-L Jazz Program.
The UW-L Jazz Orchestra will perform six contemporary jazz and Latin jazz selections. Seniors Michael Wininsky, piano, and Gerrit Von Ruiswyk, trumpet, will be the soloist on “Temenos,” a contemporary Latin selection by Swedish composer Lars Jansson. “You Rotten Kid,” a swinging blues shuffle made famous by the Buddy Rich Big Band, will feature many soloists in the ensemble including Sean Conway, tenor sax, and Noah Quintero, trumpet.
Alto saxophonist, Anton Lenertz, will play Dan Cavanaugh’s creative interpretation of Radiohead’s “Packt Like Sardines In A Crushed Tin Box.” A highlight of the band’s set will be the selection “A Time For Love” as performed by The Stan Kenton Orchestra, featuring the trombone section and senior Brandon Rentmeester.
The UW-L Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble are under the direction of Karyn Quinn.
