Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Greg Balfany will perform five selections including Jan Savitt’s “When Buddha Smiles.” Arranged by Savitt for the Glen Gray orchestra this early jazz selection features freshman drummer Reid Montangue, along with sophomore trumpeter Jimmy Jewson and junior tenor saxophonist Jordan Fay.
Wisconsin born pianist and international jazz star Geoff Keiser composed a demanding yet sensitive selection titled “Aboard the Karlynn.” Senior pianist Luke Therring will be featured in this piece. Other selections include Clark Terry’s version of C “Jam Blues” featuring almost the whole band along with compositions for the Buddy Rich and Pete Peterson big bands.
Jazz II director Karyn Quinn’s programming includes Quincy Jones’ composition for the Basie band’s “The Witching Hour.” West Coast composer and multi-reed virtuoso, Tom Kubis penned “Real Loud First Note Blues” that will feature junior saxophonist James Maxwell along with freshman guitarist Matt Wiaworka and sophomore trumpeter Gerrit VanRyswuick.
Freshman drummer Brett Hulmer will be featured on two contemporary jazz pieces, “Rivers” and “North Shore Morning.”
