'Miss Saigon,' Orientalism, problematics of international adoption to be discussed Feb. 19
Protests against the October 2013 theatrical run of "Miss Saigon" at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul, Minn., inspired UW-L assistant professors Sara Docan-Morgan and Gerald Iguchi to develop a presentation about the difficulties faced by Koreans adopted by white American parents and how narratives of cultural forms such as "Miss Saigon" and its predecessor "Madame Butterfly" exacerbate and perpetuate their pain and alienation. "'Miss Saigon,' Orientalism, and the Problematics of International Adoption: Challenging Racial, Gendered, and Familial Commonsense" will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Iguchi will discuss the history of the Orientalist, imperialist and racial commonsense present in and perpetuated by the aestheticized racism of these same cultural forms. Both Docan-Morgan's and Iguchi's adoptions were inter-ethnic, inter-”racial.” The presentation is sponsored by the UW-L Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. Enjoy mindful choices
Many people believe that healthy eating means a world of boring, tasteless food with little variety.
University Dining believes in another approach. One filled with choices, satisfying flavors, full plates and healthy indulgence. We call this approach mindful. Look for the green heart to identify mindful choices.
Our mindful recipes are authentically healthy choices. Highlights of mindful choices include: meals and entrees that fill the plate with fewer than 600 calories due to the use of more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and less fat; significantly reduced sodium in our soups to less than 700 mg per 8 oz. serving by replacing salt with more fresh herbs and spices; no trans fat and less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fats in all our menu selections.
Find mindful choices every day in the Cartwright Center Galley at Cyclone Salads and Slice of Life, and for dinner on Wednesdays at 360 Degrees, and many other places in Whitney Center.
Finally, an easy way to enjoy health — that’s mindful.

UW-L in the news
A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news.
Use 'persistent' links for linking success
Faculty and staff who link to library resources in D2L or elsewhere often end up with links that do not work or only work on campus. Links to articles, videos or other resources that are copied and pasted from the browser’s address bar often come from deep within the parent database and do not reflect the authentication information necessary to view the page when starting a new browser session. To link successfully to a specific article or video, it is best to use a “persistent link.” Many databases now display persistent links somewhere in the article record. Find and link to resources using persistent links in databases such as EBSCOhost, Elsevier ScienceDirect, OVID, Films on Demand, LexisNexis Academic and JSTOR. on this library Web page: http://www2.uwlax.edu/Films on Demand has new process to link to videos
Films on Demand, a service that streams academic videos and clips, has new, more secure procedures to create persistent links to videos. Faculty and staff who have current links to videos in D2L or elsewhere, will need to reformat those links or they will cease to function correctly. The process is described here: http://www2.uwlax.
