Did you know that you should wait two weeks after unprotected sex to get tested for sexually transmitted infections?
Of course, the best way to prevent STIs is to use a barrier method, like an external or internal condom! But things happens -- STIs can be transmitted during unprotected sex, but the signs and symptoms might take longer to appear. Getting tested for STIs before they are detectable can result in a false negative test, an undiagnosed infection, and long-term consequences from an asymptomatic STI.
STI Testing at UWL
Sexually transmitted infections may appear or become symptomatic in different frames of time. If you are sexually active, it is important to get tested regularly and communicate openly with your partner(s). Walk-in STI testing is available at the Student Health Center at the following times:
- Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 8:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm
- Tuesdays: 9:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm
Gonorrhea and chlamydia tests, the most common STIs in La Crosse, are available for $5. HIV tests cost an additional $20. Learn more about STI testing at the Student Health Center here.
