UWL math students Jack Meyers and Daniel Morrison collaborated with Fastenal Co., using math concepts and language, to effectively make market predictions for the company’s domestic summer sales. Through a combined application of mathematical modeling, data science, computer programming and statistical time series estimation, the two assisted Fastenal leaders in making financial market decisions. Meyers and Morrison were advised by Math Department faculty members Song Chen and Chad Vidden.
The work is paying benefits for the students too. Stemming from the project’ success, Meyers has obtained an internship with Fastenal during the 2015-16 academic year. Morrison is preparing to present his summer findings at the upcoming Math Department Colloquium series.
Looking for an opportunity to benefit the local community with your math skills? Join the 7th annual Wisconsin Mathematical Modeling Challenge (WMMC) and solve problems posed by Fastenal Co. and Xcel Energy.
The WMMC is a two-day competition, Oct. 17-18, with participants from several regional universities. Students will compete as a team of three, so bring your own team or you can be assigned to one. The contest is free to attend with two days of meals provided. The winning team gets $300 in gift cards. Representatives of Fastenal and Xcel will be at the competition to network with students and discuss internship opportunities.
For contest rules and registration guidelines, visit: https://www.uwlax.edu/Mathematics/Wisconsin-Mathematical-Modeling-Challenge-(WMMC)/. The registration deadline is approaching, so register soon.
For anything about the WMMC or mathematical modeling, contact Math faculty members Chen at schen@uwlax.edu or Vidden at cvidden@uwlax.edu. Check out the Mathematical Modeling Club 4-6 p.m. Wednesdays in 201 Cowley Hall.
