UW-L Theatre presents a Chaos Filled Wedding
UW-L's Department of Theatre Arts production "Big Love" begs the question, “If you were forced to marry somebody, what would you do?”
"Big Love" by Charles Mee will show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, and Thursday, May 2, through Saturday, May 4. Matinee performances are set for 2 p.m. Sundays, April 28, and May 5. All performances will be held in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts.
"Big Love" is the biggest wedding you’ve never seen. In it, 50 young brides are promised to 50 brothers without their consent. Fleeing from their homeland of Greece to Italy, the women seek refuge in a wealthy estate. The grooms, demanding the women’s hands in marriage, follow them and vehemently decline a compromise, forcing the young brides to take matters into their own hands. This play is a collision of styles, alternately hilarious and horrifying, a battle of the sexes on steroids that typifies the chaos of modern society and the unyielding, and often impossible, urge to control destiny.
The public is invited to a post-show discussion led by the professors and staff of the Women’s and Gender Studies department on Sunday, April 28, where they will discuss the performance and the issues in it.
Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday, April 22. Box office hours are 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and one hour before show times. Tickets are $12 for seniors/non UW-L students and $4 for UW-L students; $14 for all others; call 785.8522.
