Jazz ensembles set performance
The UW-La Crosse Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert that has something for jazz lovers.
The ensembles will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in The Bluffs, UWL Student Union, 521 East Ave. N. The event is free and open to the public.
Each group will cover a wide variety of instrumental and big band vocal pieces. The repertoire includes everything from Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton to Dean Martin, Jaco Pastorius and the Beatles.
Among the concert highlights are a feature for Jazz Orchestra lead alto saxophonist Andrew Jones, playing in Billy Strayhorn’s “Blood Count.” Mike Meyers returns to sing more “rat pack” vocals via Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Also singing with the Jazz Orchestra is Selah-Marie Castellano, featured on John Clayton’s “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear from Me.” Rounding out vocals, Leah Williams has two features with the Jazz Ensemble, “Teach Me Tonight” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”
The concert will be directed by UWL Director of Jazz Studies Jeff Erickson.
