Growing donor support strengthens opportunities at UWL

Student experiences at UW-La Crosse are receiving a major boost thanks to growing donor support and a record-setting year for fundraising.

The UWL Alumni & Friends Foundation reported more than $19 million in gifts and pledges during fiscal year 2026, more than doubling the amount raised in 2025. Much of that support is designated by donors for specific purposes and is spent over time, rather than in a single year.

Students are already feeling the impact. In 2026, the Foundation awarded more than 1,300 scholarships totaling $1.9 million, reducing financial burden and promoting student success.

Allison Ziegelman, vice chancellor for Advancement and president of the Foundation, says strong fundraising reflects the belief and pride alumni and friends feel toward UWL.

"I give so much credit to the team at the Foundation. This year’s fundraising success speaks volumes about the work that is happening at UWL; it is something that alumni and donors believe in," Ziegelman says. "They're showing their endorsement through gifts that invest in programs and create opportunities for UWL students."

Beyond scholarships, philanthropy helps to fund professorships, fellowships, undergraduate research, study abroad experiences, faculty and staff development, facility improvements, and other initiatives that enhance teaching, learning and the overall campus experience.

Donor support through philanthropy is particularly impactful as UWL works to navigate fluctuations in state funding and continues to seek new ways to invest in students.

"Donors play a vital role in strengthening UWL and helping us continue to provide outstanding experiences for our students," Chancellor James Beeby says. "I am thrilled to see so many alumni and friends investing in UWL, not only through philanthropy but through their eagerness to connect and share their passions with us. Their continued engagement shows a tremendous sense of pride in UWL and the lasting impact the university has had on their lives."

UWL's strong fundraising in 2026 was bolstered by the most successful giving day in school history. During the sixth annual One Day for UWL, donors contributed a record $622,000 to support programs and student opportunities across campus.

The university aims to build on that momentum during the seventh annual One Day for UWL, scheduled for Oct. 20-21.

Recent fundraising growth has also helped push the Foundation's endowment beyond $50 million for the first time, strengthening the university's long-term ability to invest in student success.
