Annual “Ultimate Race” educates participants on sexual assault
A sexual assault occurs every 100 seconds — that’s a statistic participants in UWL’s Ultimate Race learned. The annual on-campus event raises awareness and educates participants about sexual assault and resources that are available.
“This is just a start,” said Mallory Gehrmann, a Violence Prevention intern who co-organized the event. “It’s happening on campuses all around.”
Like the TV show “The Amazing Race,” teams of students followed clues to multiple stations on campus. To earn their next clue, they had to answer trivia questions or complete an activity related to sexual assault. “This is a way to bring awareness in a fun activity,” said Gehrmann.
Following the race, a reception was held where a sexual assault survivor shared their story. The participants and volunteers then reflected on what they learned.
UWL Student Association President Jacob Schimmel attended the event and shared with the group what he is working to build awareness. “Not enough people know this is an important issue,” he said.
