Typically, librarians ask you to be quiet. But that’s not the plan next week. Murphy Library’s faculty are asking students and others in the campus community to let out a good scream during a “Scream Out Your Stress” event Monday, May 7, at the Hoeschler Tower on campus.
Students and faculty in need of a little stress relief from final exams week will meet between finals — from 4:35-4:45 p.m. Monday. UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow and Interim Provost Betsy Morgan will lead the scream.
“I see how stressed the students are,” says Rachel Slough teaching and learning librarian. “They’re stressed out about the economy, about jobs and scholarships — and then add to that the pressure of finals week.”
UW-La Crosse’s Murphy Library faculty are organizing the event, which originated on a white board in the library where students were encouraged to write down what they needed to help overcome stress during finals.
Slough adds the event helps change stereotypes about librarians. “We are not the quiet, bun-wearing, shushing types,” she jokes.
“Scream out Your Stress” kicks off Murphy Library’s “Finals Fun Fest,” a series of activities planned throughout finals week to help reduce stress such as Xbox Kinect games, movie watching, card and board games, crafts and more. UW-L’s Campus Climate office is providing coffee and snacks at “Scream Out Your Stress.”
