The UW-L Speaks Out On Race Series includes a three-part dialogue on race spurred by the results of campus climate surveys. The first session on March 10 was dedicated to listening. The second session, set for Tuesday, March 31, will focus on learning from one another about issues related to race and privilege. The third session on Tuesday, April 21, will address race-related concerns on campus. In Argentina, as in most of Latin America, abortion is illegal in the vast majority of cases. Historically this has meant that poor women who wanted to terminate a pregnancy faced enormous risks. Recently, off-label use of the prescription ulcer drug misoprostol has made home pharmaceutical abortion more accessible. Reproductive rights activists have taken on new roles as educators and lay social scientists to make abortion safe and accessible to all women, even in a country where it remains illegal.
Assistant Professor Julia McReynolds-Perez, Sociology/Archaeology, will present “With one little cell phone we caused quite an uproar!” Reproductive Rights Activism Where Abortion is Illegal at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, in 1300 Centennial Hall.

Students will be able to eat dinner, relax and make a craft for free. Some of the crafts that have been done in the past include: pin boards, mason jars, valentines and picture frames.

Get sneak preview of 'Last Words of the Holy Ghost' at April 3 event
Matt Cashion, English, will present a sneak preview of his short story collection "Last Words of the Holy Ghost" from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, in 113 Wimberly Hall.
The collection won the 2015 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction, judged by Lee K. Abbott, and will be published November by the University of North Texas Press.
Cashion will provide an advance glimpse of the 12 diverse stories that make up the collection, as well as a brief discussion of the stories behind the stories —what inspired them, how they evolved through the process of revision, and how they came together to form a book that found itself (somewhat surprisingly, according to the author) the recipient of a national prize.

Pink Floyd's 'Division Bell' to be featured at April 3 Album Encounters; 'The Xtra Terrestrial Files' is April Public Program
The next Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature Pink Floyd's "Division Bell" at 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for April is "The Xtra Terrestrial Files." The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays, April 4, 11, 18, and 25. Poet, activist and life lover Katie Wirsing has toured around the world speaking on gender, love, sexuality, spirituality, jello wrestling and her grandmother’s love of hot dogs.
Wirsing will speak on campus at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
Wirsing, who believes the mouth is a speakerbox to whatever makes your heart sing most, is described as having "opera lungs and a getaway car for anyone willing to pick up and move forward."
Wirsing is a Denver representative at the Women of the World Poetry Slam. Her work has been featured on college campuses across the U.S. and on NPR, the BBC and local radio stations. She performed as the opening act for The Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and AquaGirl, a queer woman’s festival, as well as being the poetic voice on a national commercial. A member of the National Poetry Slam Championship team, Wirsing is ranked 13th in the world as a female poet.
She has toured internationally with Andrea Gibson and Buddy Wakefield and has opened for The Flobots, Saul Williams and legendary lesbian comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer.
The free event is sponsored by the Pride Center.

Apply now to perform in UW-L's 14th annual drag show on Saturday, April 18.
The "7 Deadly Sins" drag show will be held at 7 p.m. in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Additon. Faculty and staff who love to sing or perform on stage can apply by emailing wvanroosenbeek@uwlax.edu. Include name, drag name and song title for performance. The deadline to apply is Saturday, April 11, or until filled.

AmaXIng Challenge 5K on campus April 11
Alpha Xi Delta is sponsoring the AmaXIng Challenge 5K on Saturday, April 11, on campus. Register online for $10 before April 11 or pay $15 at the Hoeschler Tower the day of the event. The race starts at 9 a.m. Each participant will get a prize. The event also includes raffle items. Money raised will go to Autism Speaks. Musicians, DJs, donations wanted for April 11 La Crosse Warming Center fundraiser
Western Technical College students will host a La Crosse Warming Center fundraiser from 4-10 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the George Street Pub, 1728 George St.
The event includes music, food, beer, a silent auction with donations from more than 40 businesses and individuals and door prizes.
The Warming Center is run by Catholic Charities and is located in the heart of downtown La Crosse. The non-profit organization helps to provide a warm environment for homeless people. During harsh winter months, the warming center is over-crowded and needs many donations to keep it running.

Baseball fans are invited to join other UW-L faculty, staff, family and friends at UW-L Night Tuesday, June 2, at the La Crosse Loggers game at Copeland Park, 800 Copeland Ave.
Tickets are on the Miller Lite Mezzanine and include all you-can-eat food and soda and beer.
Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 30 people to purchase tickets will receive a complimentary T-shirt, courtesy of the UW-L Alumni Association. Former UW-L employee Manny Felix, Jooyeon Jin, Richard Mikat, Stephanie Sciarrino and Garth Tymeson; all Exercise and Sport Science; presented "Visual Strategies and Motor Performance of Children with Autism" at the National Convention of the Society of Health and Physical Educators in Seattle on March 18. Felix, Jin and Tymeson also presented "What is Adequate Adapted Physical Education Training for Physical Education Teacher Education Majors?" at the convention on March 19.
Elizabeth Peacock, Anthropology, participated in the panel discussion "One Year Later: The Ukrainian Crisis. A Panel Looking Back and Moving Forward" March 23 at UW-Madison.
UW-L's women's track and field team won the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championship over Spring Break. It's the first time UW-L's women's team has won the NCAA national title. The victory raises the total number of national indoor championships won by UW-L Eagle athletic programs to 64, the most national titles compiled by any university or college in the state of Wisconsin.

Serving size versus portion size: is there a difference?
The way to a healthy lifestyle is keeping in mind not only the food we put on our plates, but the quantities as well. The terms “serving” and “portion” are often used interchangeably when they, in actuality, have different meanings. A serving size is the amount of food recommended in consumer education materials (such as MyPlate), while a portion is the amount of a food one chooses to consume at one time. A portion can be more or less than a serving size.
Here are some everyday comparisons to help you figure out your serving sizes:
- 1 cup of pasta is the size of a baseball
- 3 ounces of meat is a size of a deck of cards
- ½ cup of veggies is the size of a computer mouse
- ¼ cup of nuts is the size of an egg
- 2 tablespoons of peanut butter is the size of a ping pong ball
