Local educators will gather at UW-L Monday, March 11, to see the latest in teaching resources. They will have an opportunity to discover award-winning resources in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as social studies for K-12 classrooms.
The PK-12 STEM and Social Studies Teacher Resource Day runs from 2-5:30 p.m. in the Alice Hagar Curriculum Center on the 2nd floor of Murphy Library. The program is free; participants may drop in at any time.
This is the seventh in the annual program highlighting STEM resources. The programs are a hands-on experience for many local educators and students. Participants can browse, read and review award-winning, non-fiction books specifically selected to be relevant to K-12 teachers, librarians, school media center administrators and other educators.
Tim Gerber, program organizer and UW-L biology professor, says the event is popular among teachers. “The comment I get most often from teachers who have attended the resource day is that they feel so much better prepared to select specific materials that will benefit their classes and their curricula without having to guess,” he says. “It saves them time and money in the long run.”
Murphy Library purchases the books and materials annually from Science Books & Films’ “Best Lists” and from the National Science Teachers Association’s “Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children.” The collection is available in Murphy Library year-round for review by students in the School of Education, as well as others.
