Barbara Stewart, Associate Dean for Diversity & Inclusion, will receive the 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award.
Stewart will be honored at the La Crosse’s MLK Jr. Community Celebration at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan 19, at the Viterbo Fine Arts Center Main Theater. The award recognizes Stewart’s leadership in creating equity and inclusion within UW-L, the wider community and state.
Stewart approaches her position at UW-L not only as an administrator, but also as a mentor, role model and advocate for justice. During her career, she has encouraged and inspired hundreds of under-represented students and employees while working to build more fairness and access in educational institutions and beyond.
In the community, Steward has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Onalaska School District Village Partners, the Eagle Bluff Elementary School, the YWCA, La Crosse Area National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the La Crosse Hmoob Cultural & Community Agency, and as a presenter for the Onalaska High School Diversity Days. She recently received the 2014 YWCA Outstanding Women’s Tribute in the Social Justice category.
The 2015 MLK Jr. Community Celebration features speaker Ruby Bridges who, as a child, helped desegregate the New Orleans William Frantz Public Schools. Admission is free.
