By UW-L student Melissa Moss Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” UW-L’s Habitat for Humanity organization offers students many opportunities to give by getting involved with volunteer opportunities. During spring break the organization is taking a service trip to Mandeville, La., to build houses. Thirty-five spots are open for UW-L students on a first-come first-served basis. Trip cost is $500, which includes a $100 down payment. Along with the service work, there will be opportunities for relaxation, such as hiking and exploring a nearby state park and enjoying area beaches. Tara Noye, president of the UW-L Habitat for Humanity, says that the organization is dedicated to helping out the community when there is a need. Teaming with the La Crosse Habitat for Humanity chapter, they are a very active volunteer organization. This semester the group worked with the Salvation Army, the Children’s Museum, Onalaska Care Center and Habitat Builds. The UW-L Habitat for Humanity group meets at 7 p.m. every other Thursday in 259 Cartwright Center. The next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 7. Meetings usually feature a speaker, a mini project and the opportunity to sign up for upcoming volunteer events.
