“Leaping La Crosse News,” a collection of monthly newsletters from 1979 to 2007 that provided information for lesbians living in the La Crosse area, is now available on the Murphy Library Digitial Collections page.
UWL student researcher Cristian Noriega initially recognized the value of the collection after interviewing a La Crosse resident, Mary O'Sullivan, for a class project. O’Sullivan had the historic collection at her home. Noriega helped bridge the gap between the resident and UWL’s Special Collections. Read the full story.
“Leaping La Crosse News” was distributed monthly and covered national, state and local news about lesbian activities, legal cases, fashion, entertainment, and events, as well as social and political activities of La Crosse area lesbians. This collection includes nearly every published issue, amounting to 317 separate issues.
The newsletters are accessible under the browse collections tab of the Murphy Library Digitial Collections page.
The original, physical copies are also accessible in Murphy Library Special Collections.
“This resource is truly an amazing time-capsule, chronicling a local piece of LGBTQ history,” says Laura Godden, associate academic librarian in Murphy Library.
