Most of the tutoring is done by fellow students, but some faculty spend time working with students as well.[/caption] UW-L students looking for studying help and tips can turn to the Murphy Learning Center. The Murphy Learning Center is where all students can receive free tutoring services in a variety of courses. Students are welcome to stop by during an open house from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18. Most of the tutoring is done by fellow students, but some faculty spend time working with students as well. Mathematics Department faculty regularly have hours in the center. This fall, instructors from Biology are organizing office hours collectively to offer tutoring each morning. Among the biology classes: A&P 312 and 313, Bio 105 and Bio 203 [caption id="attachment_26300" align="alignright" width="300"] The Murphy Learning Center in Murphy Library is where all students can receive free tutoring services.[/caption] The full list of subjects with tutors include: • Biology • Chemistry • Earth Science • Geography • Mathematics • Microbiology • Physics • Public speaking • Writing The Murphy Learning Center is located in 251 Murphy Library. The center has wireless access. There is also a SMARTBoard, an interactive white board and other technology available for use. Center hours vary depending on the subject. Check out the individual course links for more information at http://www2.uwlax.edu/murphy-learning-center/ Tips for those being tutored •Attend Class — Tutoring does not take the place of attending class. Tutoring is a service to clarify and enhance your understanding of class materials. •Arrive prepared — Review course materials and lecture notes. Bring all needed materials (textbook, notes, syllabus, etc. ...) to the tutoring session. Having all materials will help both you and the tutor to better understand the task at hand. •Learn actively — Do not just sit and listen during your tutoring session. Ask questions, do sample problems, draw diagrams, and explain course concepts in your own words. •Be proactive — Come to tutoring sessions before you fall behind in your coursework. It is easier for tutors to assist you when you first start having problems than when you are too far behind to catch up. •Understand Roles — Tutors do not take the place of the instructor. Tutors cannot do your homework for you or check to see if your homework is correct. Tutors are there to enhance your understanding of the coursework.
