More than 80 Wisconsin high school students were on campus this week trying to turn imaginary companies into an overnight success.
The students took part in the 2010 Wisconsin Business World, which aims to teach students what it takes to make the private enterprise system work.
Acting as an executive management team, the students worked in groups to experience running a business. Working with business professional volunteers, they determined selling prices, marketing costs, budgets for production, research and development, financing and stock offerings. They developed their own marketing strategies and designed an advertising campaign. And, they visited area businesses.
Jamie Durocher, vice president of sales and marketing for Marine Insurance Services in La Crosse, was one of the company advisers. The’97 CBA alum enjoys working with the students because it gives him an opportunity to volunteer, teach and stay current.
“As an adviser, I learn a lot of things from the students,” Durocher notes. “By interacting with them, I’m kept more in the loop on what the buzz is with today’s youth. This helps me relate with younger colleagues and clients I work with in my day-to-day job.”
This was the fourth time Business World was held at UW-L. Karen Langaard, Continuing Education and Extension, says the campus is an attractive campus for Business World because in offers the program’s only western Wisconsin site and houses all events in one building, Cartwright Center. Continuing Education also sponsored seven other youth summer programs this year ranging from archaeological digs to cycling.
