UWL hosts international conference on electrical, computer engineering
In a major milestone, UW-La Crosse this spring hosted the IEEE International Conference on Electro/Information Technology — a premier gathering showcasing the latest research in electrical and computer engineering.
The conference brought together more than 130 researchers, educators, students and industry professionals May 21-23 to share their findings and explore emerging issues in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, wireless communications, the Internet of Things, Embedded systems, biomedical technologies, engineering education and more.
Over 50 colleges and universities from across the country and around the world were represented.
“Personally, I felt very proud to showcase UWL and the La Crosse community to an international audience,” says Dipankar Mitra, associate professor of computer science and computer engineering, who helped organize the event.
“UWL’s selection as the host demonstrates confidence in our academic expertise, facilities, institutional support, and ability to organize a major international technical conference,” Mitra says. “It also raises the visibility of our computer science and computer engineering programs. It shows that our faculty and students are active contributors to national and international research communities and that UWL can serve as a place where important technical conversations and collaborations occur.”
This year’s conference received 258 paper submissions, a record for the event. Following peer review, 156 papers were accepted, 113 were included in the final program, and 105 were presented.
Participants exchanged ideas and built connections through technical sessions, keynote presentations and informal conversations spanning a broad range of topics.
For Mitra, the conference created opportunities to advance his scholarship, expand his professional network and explore possibilities for future research collaborations.
“My principal takeaway was that UWL has the expertise, people and institutional capacity to convene an international conference of this scale,” he says. In this way, “the professional relationships and opportunities created through such an event can continue well beyond the conference itself.”
