Dogs, cats and other animals at the Coulee Region Humane Society will benefit from an upcoming live TV telethon. The 15th annual Coulee Region Humane Society Telethon will air from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23,on KQEG-TV Channel 23, Charter Cable Channel 5, CenturyLink Prism 4, Digital 989 and UW-L campus channel 6. Rick Wilson, KQEG-TV, and Nick Rytilahti, a UW-L Communication Studies student, will host the show. Read more »

Office will be closed Friday, Nov. 29, on a case-by-case basis. Thursday, Nov. 28, classes will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26; Friday, Nov. 29, classes will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Thanksgiving recess begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27. All residence halls except for Eagle and Reuter will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, and will re-open at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1. |

Donations — no matter what the amount — make a difference and are vitally important to 73 funded partner programs from 29 different agencies. Participation allows programs to be offered that have a direct impact on the needs of the people in the community.
Those contributing at any amount will receive a 20 percent discount coupon to the University Bookstore. Those donating at least $25 will receive a free UW-L T-shirt.

Trans* Day events set for this week
Trans* Day of Remembrance was established to honor transgender individuals murdered for being themselves. UW-L has several events this week in honor of TDOR including:- Monday, Nov. 18, 5 p.m. Trans* Film Screening, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Bring blankets and pillows.
- Tuesday, Nov. 19, 7 p.m. Trans* 2.0 Training in 257 Cartwright Center.
- Wednesday, Nov. 20, 5:30 p.m. Vigil at the Hoeschler Tower, and at 6 p.m. Open Mic in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Faculty and staff get discounts, free refreshments at UW-L Bookstore Nov. 19
The University Bookstore invites UW-L employees to its Annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Event. The event runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the University Bookstore in Cartwright Center. Employees with UW-L IDs will receive a 25 percent discount on regular-priced clothing and gifts, excluding diploma frames. UW-L's got talent! Pianists, guitarists, singers, dancers and more are set to compete for cash prizes from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Prizes are $200 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place. Purchase tickets for the show for $4 in advance or pay $6 at the door. Students in a sociology of gender class were each required to provide five digital photos of something they have seen in their world that reinforces gender stereotypical beliefs or behaviors. The photos were organized into themes related to assigned readings on gender and work, family, sexuality, health, education and more. A short film using their photos was created for them to review and discuss."Gender Through Their Lenses: A Film of Students' Images" will be shown at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Carol D. Miller, Sociology & Archaeology, and UW-Stout graduate student Mark J. Seitz will lead a discussion following the film. The event is sponsored by the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department.

Free speech, expression focus of Nov. 20 forum
UW-L Political Science Department and the Political Science and Public Administration Association are hosting the public forum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. Political Science faculty member Sam Scintahe will moderate the forum. The following are panelists: Julian Bradley, chair, La Crosse County Republican Party; Rep. The talk "Everything You Need To Know About Credit" is set for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in 2205 Centennial Hall. The talk focuses on all aspects of credit — from the basics of what credit is, to diving deeper into credit cards, scores, and reports. This presentation will help attendees keep the sky limit by keeping their credit debt under it. The talk is part of the Midweek Money Talk Series and is brought to you by the It Make$ Cents! Leslie Zweigman, a representative of Angelo Educational Services (AES) will be on campus Wednesday, Nov. 20. He will be available from 9-10:45 a.m. at an information table in the Cartwright Center lobby to talk one-on-one with students who want to learn about unpaid internship opportunities. He will hold an information session at noon in 340 Cartwright Center. AES offers customized academic programs, the cornerstone of which is the prestigious London Internship Program. The Stacie Mathewson Foundation has awarded UW-L $10,000 to work on early-stage intervention strategies for college students in recovery. Students are encouraged to attend one of two focus group sessions on Tuesday, Nov. 21, in 3200 Centennial Hall to offer their input on strategies. One focus group will be held at noon; the other is at 6 p.m.Get a jump on new year's fitness goals with the Healthy Holiday Challenge; register by Nov. 21
Start making healthy choices now. Register for the five-week Healthy Holiday Challenge by Thursday, Nov. 21.
UW-L and the La Crosse County Health Department's Healthy Living for a Lifetime Program have teamed up to help challenge participants make healthy choices during the holiday season. Challenge dates run Monday, Nov. 25, through Sunday, Dec. 29.
Participants will receive:
- A five-week log to track eating and physical activity habits. A nutrition “challenge” will be given each week, however, participants will set their own fitness goal — daily activity is encouraged!
- Weekly emails, with a nutrition “challenge” and tips, as well as encouragement for regular physical activity.
Participants will be eligible to win prizes at the end of the challenge by turning in their tracking log.There are no formal weigh-in sessions for this challenge.

Lipocalin-2 is topic of Nov. 21 Bioresearch Forum
A professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology at Iowa State University is the keynote speaker at the Thursday, Nov. 21, La Crosse BioResearch Forum. Professor Nilsen-Hamilton will speak on “Lipocalin-2: A Moonlighter in the Inflammatory Response?" from 12:15-1 p.m. in the Overholt Auditorium at Gundersen Lutheran. The free forums are open to the public and hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Those attending should park in the Green ramp (see map) or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.Business Spanish in the Midwest to be discussed Nov. 22
Dorian Dorado, Modern Languages, will present "Business Spanish in the Midwest a Program and Course Analysis" from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in 230 Morris Hall. Refreshments will be provided. UW-L is one of many local organizations to participate in the monthly “Jeans Day,” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar, participants may wear jeans. Campus participants should wear LIVEMAROON gear. The next Jeans Day is Friday, Nov. 22. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. This is a small way to join together and give back to the local community. In October UW-L raised $103. The charities receiving the November contributions are Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration Three Wishes Campaign and La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The Doors is featured band at Nov. 22 Album Encounters; ‘Cosmic Castaways’ is topic of November public program
The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature the Doors' “Alive, She Cried” at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for November is ”Cosmic Castaways.” The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays in November. A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news.
"Closing of ROTC program at UW-L appears to be on hold," La Crosse Tribune, Nov. 7. The ROTC program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will not close this year, said a top university official, but details about ts future were still murky this morning...However, UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow received a phone call Wednesday night from a military leader who said the university's ROTC program would not close and be put on probation instead ... "Farm Bill, ROTC changes concern Kind," WSAU, Nov. 10. The unfinished Farm Bill and proposed cuts for a college ROTC program have been a priority for a Wisconsin Congressman. 3rd District Democrat Ron Kind says the military has agreed to not shut down the Reserve Officers Training Corps, or ROTC program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at this time...The UW-La Crosse program was the only college ROTC program in Wisconsin on the chopping block ...
