Future educator David May gains hands-on classroom experience through his work at UWL's Campus Child Center.

UWL's David May finds connection, real-world experience at Campus Child Center

David May came to UW-La Crosse with a clear goal of becoming a teacher and a desire to gain hands-on experience early in his college career.

That opportunity came when he got involved with UWL’s Campus Child Center (CCC).As a freshman, he began as a volunteer in the 3- and 4-year-old classrooms in spring 2025, before transitioning into a paid role the following fall. The position, May notes, is especially convenient due to its on-campus location and flexibility around classes and field placements.

Through his work, May has built connections with fellow education majors while gaining real-world classroom experience.

“My involvement with the CCC has allowed me to meet and connect with other education majors and gain insight into opportunities that I will be completing as well,” he says. “I have also gained experience with varying classroom situations that I am able to bring to my classes to discuss and reflect upon.”

The role has helped him develop teaching skills he’ll carry into his future career.

“I have expanded my experience doing read alouds with each age group, behavior and classroom management, as well as emotional regulation with the children,” May says. “This is beneficial to my future career as an educator because all of those things are what a teacher may encounter in their day-to-day life.”

May also credits the CCC staff for their support and mentorship.

“I have had such a pleasant experience working with the staff at the CCC. Each staff member is hardworking, personable and super helpful,” he says. “The staff is truly amazing to work with alongside the kiddos. It really is super fun and a great experience.”
