Spring break begins at 5:30 p.m. March 15

UW-L spring break begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 15. Classes resume Monday, March 25. Although classes do not meet during spring break, most offices on campus remain open for business as usual.  

March 25 is deadline for nominations for UW System P.B. Poorman Award

The campus deadline to submit nominations for the UW System P.B. Poorman Award is midnight, Monday, March 25. The award recognizes those who have distinguished and consistent achievements in service of LGBTQ people within the UW System. P.B. Poorman was a faculty member at UW-Whitewater and played an instrumental role in the foundation of the UW System Inclusivity Initiative for LGBTQ People. UW System started the P. B. Poorman Award as an honor to her legacy. The award will be presented as part of the joint UW System LGBTQ Conference/Wisconsin Women’s Studies Conference to be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18 and 19, at UW-Madison. The award winner will be honored at a formal recognition ceremony and invited to attend the conference. To be eligible, individuals must either be currently employed 50 percent time or greater as a member of a UW System institution as faculty, instructional or non-instructional academic staff, classified staff or a registered student at one of the UW System institutions. Submit nomination or self-nominate with how the recipient has:

• significantly furthered the mission, vision and goals of the Inclusivity Initiative for LGBTQ People; and/or
• performed at a high level resulting in distinction in one’s profession — campuswide, systemwide, statewide, nationally or internationally for research, teaching or service regarding LGBTQ issues; and/or
• published, presented, consulted, advocated or used creative approaches to address LGBTQ issues within the classroom or in service to students.

Facts about UW-L students:

• Transfer students at UW-L have increased by more than 50 percent since fall 2008.
• The retention rate of full-time transfer students from 2010 to 2011 was 78 percent (per a spring 2013 analysis of 460 transfer students). The UW System retention rate for full-time transfers in the same time frame was 76 percent.
• The retention rate for first- to second-year students at UW-L for the same time frame was 85 percent.

Thanks again to Coach Lois Heeren and Coach Ken Koelbl and UW-L's basketball teams for assisting March 6 with UW-L's Hoops for ALL program for kids with disabilities. You and your college student-athletes were a big hit with the children, parents and our future adapted physical education teachers. We appreciate the community service you and your players provide and the wonderful PR you spread in the community. You and your players "get it." As you know from past years, this program is part of UW-L's Center on Disability Health and Adapted Physical Activity in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. The collaboration with the La Crosse Boy's and Girl's Club allows us to access a wonderful community facility at the Mathy Center on the Viterbo Campus. UW-L's seven-week instructional program for kids and clinical education experience for future teachers is more successful and memorable for all involved because of the efforts of you and your student-athletes.
