Piano Recital

Tellef Johnson plays piano compositions of Kaikhosru Sorabji

Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies department is hosting a piano recital by Juilliard-trained pianist and composer Tellef Johnson, who will play two movements from Kaikhosru Sorabji's fifth piano sonata Opus Archimagicum and the world premiere of shorter movements from Sorabji’s Second Piano Symphony, composed in 1930s and 1950s.

Sorabji (1892-1988) was a highly idiosyncratic British-Parsi composer who wrote 11,000 pages of music in his lifetime, some of it the most complex and difficult in musical history. His music is
in fluenced by Indian classical music and can be alternately hypnotic and trance-like. The sonata, inspired by tarot cards, sorcerers, and black magic, represents the apex of his virtuosic output.

March 29, 2023 at 7:30 pm in Annett Recital Hall at UWL.

There will be a pre-concert talk at 7 pm with RGSS faculty Dr. Sana Illahe, who will also make a guest appearance on the concert singing and playing tanpura, to introduce the sociological context and the music that Sorabji’s compositions were inspired by.
