Oktoberfest at UWL: Celebrate Safely and Responsibly
As Oktoberfest approaches, the UWL Drug Free Schools Committee encourages all staff and students to enjoy the festivities while keeping safety and well-being top of mind. Whether you are attending events in the community or celebrating with friends, here are some important reminders and resources to help you make informed choices.
UWL Policies to Know

Student Conduct: UWS Chapters 17 & 18
Students are expected to uphold the standards outlined in UWS Chapters 17 & 18, which cover nonacademic misconduct and student discipline. Violations related to alcohol use—such as underage drinking, public intoxication, or disruptive behavior—can result in disciplinary action.
Student Handbook Overview and code of conduct.
Safety Tips for a Fun and Responsible Oktoberfest
- Plan ahead: Know your limits and make a plan for transportation, especially if you will be drinking. With your student ID, you have access to the Municipal Transit (MTU) bus for free at any time.
- The Safe Ride bus offers a safe ride between downtown and campus on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 10:30pm - 3:00am. The Safe Ride bus circulates through the route every 15 minutes. UWL Students, friends, and the general public ride free on the Safe Ride bus.
- Stay with friends: Stick with a group and look out for one another.
- Hydrate and eat: Drink water and eat before, during, and after consuming alcohol. The recommended guideline is one standard drink per hour.
- Know the law: Underage drinking and public intoxication are illegal and can have serious consequences.
- Report concerns: If you see something concerning, speak up or report it. If you yourself are publicly intoxicated but come across an individual that may be experiencing alcohol poisoning, do not hesitate to call.
Reporting Procedures
To be sure that concerns and issues are resolved quickly, please follow the correct protocol. Students and staff have equal access to the reporting procedures below. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the procedures and the signs of alcohol posioning.
- For emergency concerns do not wait until the individual is unconscious, and stay with them until the paramedics arrive:
- Contact the University Police Department by calling 608-789-9999. The Responsible Action Policy encourages students to call for emergency medical assistance if someone may be in danger from alcohol or drug use. Responsible Action protects the caller from police citation and/or university discipline for alcohol-related offenses following the completion of any educational programs deemed necessary by the Dean of Students.
- If you are not on campus, please call the La Crosse Police Department by dialing 9-1-1.
- For a non-urgent issue:
- To report a concern about a student: Report a Concern link.
