Presentations set for Aug. 6
UWL undergraduate students in the McNair Scholars Program who participated in summer undergraduate research will present their work from 12:30-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, in 259 Cartwright Center.
“The goal of our program is to prepare eligible students for success in graduate school,” says Jessica Thill, McNair Scholars program coordinator. “The research opportunity is a critical component of this preparation since it gives students the opportunity to build relationships with faculty and to carry out their own rigorous undergraduate project.”

Stephany Anzueto, UWL senior and sociology and Spanish major, explored factors that contribute to academic success for elementary-age students with her adviser, Enilda Delgado. She found the higher a parent’s education level and involvement in their child’s education, the more likely the child was to have academic success. However, the strongest predictor of academic success was a parent’s socio-economic status, a surprise for Anzueto. She thought involvement would be the biggest factor.
Q&A with Stephany Anzueto, senior
Q: What is one thing you’ve learned in the McNair Scholars Program that you had no idea about, but are now glad to know?
A: The program pushes us to grow and try things out of our comfort zone. My advisers in the McNair program pushed me to always try something new even though it makes you feel uncomfortable. It’s a growing experience. It prepares you for the professional world. This program is helping me take the first steps.
Q: Give me three words that describe what undergraduate research through the program entails?
A: Self-discipline, perseverance and learning.
Q: What are your future goals?
A: I want to earn master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology. Right now I’m preparing for graduate school by taking a GRE prep course. I’m also in the process of searching for graduate schools and will be applying. One day I can see myself teaching or doing research at a university. I want to work with students in an educational setting.

Students in the McNair Scholars Program have been dedicating 20-30 hours a week to research during the summer months. They've also been taking GRE-prep courses and visiting graduate school campuses as part of the program.
