StateUniversity.com has ranked UW-La Crosse as the No. 2 public university in Wisconsin in 2020 – out of 50 private and public institutions in the state.

The website devoted to college and university information shared updated rankings for the top 2,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. The only UW System school to rank higher was UW-Madison.

Overall, Lawrence University was No. 1, followed by UW-Madison, Marquette University, UWL and Beloit College. View the rankings for Wisconsin.

The StateUniversity.com ranking is statistical and based on U.S. government surveys and reports provided by the schools. It compares factors such as student-to-faculty ratio, student retention and test scores. UWL’s most current data shows a student-to-faculty ratio of 19:1 and a retention rate of 84%. This means 84% of first-year students stay on for a second year.

“UW-La Crosse is routinely well represented in university rankings such as this. I think it affirms that our students have a great academic experience on campus with numerous opportunities to engage, connect and find support,” says Corey Sjoquist, UWL director of Admissions, noting UWL’s long history being a top-ranked school by U.S. News & World Report.

In September 2019, UWL was ranked the No. 3 public university among Best Regional Universities in the Midwest, according to U.S. News & World Report. This was the 19th year in a row that UWL remained the state’s top-ranked comprehensive campus in the UW System.
