Social media, such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, accelerates the dissemination of information, but is the information always reliable? True? UW-L’s Director of Academic Technologies Jim Jorstad will present “The Global Influence of Social Media in Politics and in Our Lives” at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in 1309 Centennial Hall. At this free talk, Jorstad will discuss the power of social media and its reach.

Insects drive some people buggy. But that’s not the case for Assistant Biology Professor Barrett Klein. He has an obvious love of entomology. If not clear from his office adorned with insect art, it’s evident from the ant-patterned neckties he wears to class.

UW-L police officer raises $436 to help fight breast cancer

University Police Officer Dave Pehl raised $436 to increase awareness of and help fight breast cancer on Wednesday. Pehl parked his squad car at the Hoeschler Tower where he sold coffee and doughnuts. Combined with $600 raised through a penny war fundraiser in UW-L residence halls earlier in the semester, the total donation to help fight breast cancer will be more than $1,000. Wentz Hall residents invite elementary school children to trick or treat on Halloween

Wentz Hall residents invite local elementary school children to trick or treat at their hall on Halloween. They encourage trick-or-treaters to stop by the res hall from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, for treats. Trick-or-treaters can get treats from residents who have their doors decorated with either a pumpkin or a ghost.  

Political debates at UW-L continue Oct. 30

The Political Science and Public Administration Department’s campus debates will continue this week. Incumbent  Rep. Ron Kind (D) and Col. Ray Boland (R), candidates for the Third Congressional District, will face off from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. ‘Wisconsin Soundscapes’ tour visits the Pump House Regional Arts Center

UW-Oshkosh professor and pianist Jeri-Mae G. Astolfi will perform six works by Wisconsin composers commissioned to capture the spirit of the state’s people, places, events and more at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Pump House Regional Arts Center. The free concert is part of a statewide concert series on Nov. 1. Astolfi debuted “Wisconsin Soundscapes” at UW-Oshkosh on Sept. 30. The tour will also travel to Milwaukee, Madison, Manitowoc and Three Lakes. In 2011, the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers received support from the Wisconsin Arts Board to commission six Wisconsin composers, each chosen through a double-blind judging process, to create original solo piano works based on Wisconsin themes. With support from a second Wisconsin Arts Board grant in 2012, the resultant concert was designed to be performed in communities throughout Wisconsin. Human rights in Guatemala is topic of Nov. 2 brown bag lunch discussion

Connie Vanderhyden, Multicultural Student Services, will facilitate the Campus Climate Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts discussion at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Cameron Hall of Nations in Centennial Hall. “Human Rights in Guatemala” is the featured film and discussion topic. “Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts" discussions are held on the first Friday of the month to discuss contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues. Films range from TED Talks to documentaries and typically last less than 45 minutes. Discussion follows. Film Series Events are presented and facilitated by friends and colleagues of Campus Climate and are free and open to everyone. Resilience of riverine landscapes is topic of Nov. 2 presentation

Visiting Fulbright Senior Research Scholar at the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (USGS) Martin Thoms will present a free seminar at 3:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2,  in 1309 Centennial Hall. The professor from the University of New England, Australia, will present "How Do We Build the Resilience of Riverine Landscapes? A Viewpoint From Down Under." Moody Blues is featured band at Nov. 2 Album Encounters; public program ‘Cosmic Colors’ set for Saturdays throughout November

The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show features Moody Blues'  "In Search of the Lost Chord" at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $4. Physical Therapy Club offers Massage Days Nov. 2, 3

Get a massage and donate funds to a charity. UW-L's Physical Therapy Club is giving massages from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in 3010 Health Science Center. Cost is $7 for 15 minutes and $10 for 30 minutes.  

Nationally-renowned hazing expert to talk on campus Nov. 4; workshop on hazing to be held Nov. 5

Nationally-renowned hazing expert Rick Barnes is returning to UW-L to speak with students, faculty, and staff about hazing. Research shows that 55 percent of college students involved in clubs, teams and other extra-curricular are hazed, yet nine out of 10 students that experience hazing behavior in college do not consider themselves to have been hazed. Barnes will give a talk for students at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. He will facilitate a workshop for faculty and staff from 8:30-10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Breakfast refreshments will be provided. To attend RSVP to Sue White, Recreational Sports, by Tuesday, Oct. 30. Attendees are encouraged to bring a food item for UW-L's Helping Our Own Food Pantry. The Division of Student Affairs and an academic staff professional development grant provided funding for the event.

November events wrap up fall 2012 Transgender Identities Series

Talks and workshops regarding transgender youth and homelessness, and criminalization of gender non-conformity wrap up the fall 2012 Transgender Indentities Series. Fatima Arain, Capitol Hill case manager, Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets, will share her experience with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness, the non-profit industrial complex and community organizing. "Transgender Youth and Homelessness" is set for 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall Transgender Rights Lawyer and Activist Owen Daniel-McCarter will give two lectures on campus. "Criminalization of Gender Non-Conformity" is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in 339 Cartwright Center. Daniel-McCarter will share an overview of the history of the criminalization of gender non-conformity in the U.S. "Beyond the Non-Profit Industrial Complex?" will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in 1303 Centennial Hall. He will explore the limitations and possibilities presented by the non-profit system and discuss the history of the system, non-profits' role in movement building work in the U.S., inherent limitations presented by capitalism. La Crosse New Music Festival 2012 on campus Nov. 6-8

Self-Sufficiency Program graduates will share their stories at SSP's eighth annual Locally Grown Scholarship Breakfast Wednesday, Nov. 7, in UW-L's Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. This year's breakfast fundraiser, “Ordinary Heroes,” runs from 8-9 a.m. UW-L student-parent Susan Fabian is this year's keynote speaker. She and other students will share their stories of how education is helping to shape their futures and the lives of their children. 'Programming for Safety, Programming for Health' talk to be held Nov. 7

Learn lessons for computer programming in education from how Epic software company programs for safety and for health. Epic makes software for mid-size and large medical groups, hospitals and integrated healthcare organizations, Janet Campbell, from Epic's Research and Development, will give a free talk at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in 1400 Centennial Hall. Campbell will discuss the complicated aspects of programming and how software can help make it harder to do the wrong thing, easier to do the right thing and to do no harm. She has worked across the continuum of Epic software, from billing to clinical care to social networking. Today, she focuses primarily on building engaging applications directly for patients so they can understand their health care and participate more fully. When she's not writing code, Campbell focuses primarily on peer education, process improvement, government policy and human resources at Epic. The talk is hosted by UW-L's Computer Science Department.

UW-L's LIA student group plays active role in Dow employee development program

UW-L's award-winning Leadership in Action (LIA) student organization group was the main attraction at Dow Chemical's World Headquarters on Oct.11, National Coming Out Day. That day was also GLAD's (Gay, Lesbian at Dow) Ally Coming Out Day, a day when Dow administration encouraged employees to to come out as allies — to show support and to be role models in the workplace and in the community — for the company's lesbians and gays. Leadership in Action educates campus and community members about diversity issues, encourages their audiences to take an active role in diversity acceptance, and educates off-campus and out of state communities, agencies and organizations about diversity issues. Dow asked LIA to prepare intense skits. LIA presented the audience interactive vignettes they developed this semester first to 200 corporate executives at Dow's World Headquarters Employee Development Center. Later, LIA also presented vignettes to 85 Michigan Operations (Dow's Michigan division) personnel. In each session, audience members volunteered to play vignette roles along with LIA students. Each session was professionally televised and taped. The tapes will be used to train all 52,000 Dow employees located at 36 nations throughout the world. UW-L's Beta Tau Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi inducted 17 members Oct. 20. More than 1,000 members have been inducted since 1930. Kappa Delta Pi is an International Honor Society in Education and provides professional development, services and opportunities for personal enrichment and scholarships to its 95 current active members. David Hart, English, presented “The Globalectics of Nationalism in Michelle Cliff’s and C.L.R. James’ Writing,” at the 31st Annual West Indian Literature Conference, celebrating "Imagined Nations, 50 Years Later: Reflections on Independence and Federation in the Caribbean," held at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., Oct. 14. Barrett Klein, Biology, illustrated the book "Damselflies of Texas." It has been awarded runner-up for the Hamilton Book Award. Library catalog changes

UW System librarians are in the midst of an initiative to update aging library catalogs. Murphy Library's catalog is one of the UW System-licensed catalogs that is being updated this year. Two versions of the catalog are currently available to UW-L. Find both at the Murphy Library home page at the following links: Books (Library Catalog) and UW System Catalog. Both offer some strengths and weaknesses in searching, but both continue to provide the ability to search for books, movies and many other materials at Murphy Library and all UW-System libraries, to request materials from other libraries, and to log into personal accounts to view and manage requests and checked out items. During the next several months, Murphy Library will evaluate these and one other catalog interface.
