The university’s “It Make$ Cents!” program has received a 2012 Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award. UW-L was one of nine organizations and 12 individuals to be honored by the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy. Gov. Scott Walker recognized the UW-L program during a ceremony at the state capitol March 1. Walker saluted the recipients for excelling in efforts to improve the financial knowledge and well being of the people of Wisconsin. “They are making a difference in our schools, our workplaces and our communities across the state,” said Walker. It Make$ Cents! reaches to students in a variety of ways, from one-on-one counseling to outreach tables and social media. The goal is simple: give students resources needed to make wise choices about personal finances. Organizers hope the program can be used as a model for other Wisconsin post-secondary institutions. Aaron Knapp, a Financial Aid Counselor in the UW-L Financial Aid Office who leads the effort, says while the program is geared toward helping all students, its focus is on disadvantaged students such as low income, first generation, and multicultural students who may be more susceptible to having financial hardships. “We have information for every level of student; however, this information differs by different levels,” Knapp explains. “Juniors and seniors seem to find our information most useful, given that the light at the end of the tunnel is often coming up quick for them in terms of graduation and entering the professional world.” During 2012, nearly 900 UW-L students participated in It Make$ Cents programming. Recipients of the 2012 Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award were selected from 49 nominations. The Governor’s Council’s mission is to measurably improve the financial literacy of Wisconsin citizens.
