Korean Wave-Globalization of Korean Traditional Culture 2017

Korean Traditional Music Performance featuring "Danullim Gayageum Ensemble" from South Korea.

The UW-L Music Department is hosting "Korean Wave-Globalization of Korean Traditional Culture 2017" events on campus from March 22 to March 24, 2017. Native to South Korea, the "Danullim Gayageum Ensemble" specializes in Korean gayageum music. Gayageum is considered as the most representative Korean string instrument which dates back to the 3rd century. The gayageum performers pluck and flick the strings with their fingers on right hand while controlling various articulations on the strings with left hand. The traditional 12 stringed gayageum is tuned to pentatonic (emphasizing five tones) scale. The "Danullim Gayageum Ensemble" also specializes in 25 stringed gayageum, which is a 20th century addition. Under the musical director, Jaedong Hong, “Danulllim Gayageum Ensemble” will be presenting Korean traditional instrumental and vocal music, as well as fusion music.

Their performance tour is brought to us by the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Foundation (KoTPA) and through a UW-L College of Liberal Studies Grant. The campus events are also supported by UW-L Korean Percussion Ensemble, Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee, Office of International Education & Engagement, and Foundation.

The events include a masterclass and two performances. All events are free and open to the public.
