Keynote: Asset Based Community Development: Creating a Powerful Community Voice of Health and Well Being

The La Crosse Mayor's Neighborhood Expo Keynote speaker is Lisa Hadden, ABCD Institute. Ms. Hadden will present the guiding principles of Asset Based Community Development and how communities can utilize these tools to improve health outcomes.

In this model, the community is viewed not merely as a consumer of health but as a co-producer of health. It emphasizes that health professionals are partners with neighbors and community residents in creating and sustaining health. The idea is that people's ability to create health and well-being for themselves is vast and untapped. Health care systems and health professions education tend to focus on illness and disease, but if this is all that is assessed, this is all that will be identified.

In contrast, pursuing what creates and sustains health, can uncover an entirely different picture of a community. When a community us encouraged to define health in its own terms, authentic and powerful voices can provide insights outside of conventional wisdom in existing medical models. Paying attention to what communities tell us allows for building on self-described assets.

Ms. Hadden serves as the Executive Director of the Mid Central Area Health Education Center at the CMU College of Medicine covering a 19 county region in Mid-Michigan.
