Producing biofuels with a little help of our microbial friends

Part of the UW System Women and Science Program

Seminar by Camila Carlos, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow from the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Abstract Seminar

Plant biomass materials have high energy potential, are renewable and abundant, and are therefore, a promising source of biofuels. To be converted into biofuels, plant biomass needs to be degraded into fermentable sugars – a process that naturally occurs in diverse environments and it is mediated by microbial communities. Understanding how members of microbial communities work together during biomass degradation can lead to the development of new technologies for the biofuel industry.
