Inclusive Learning and Teaching Workshop: "Let's Talk About (Early Modern) Sex"

Dr. Kate Parker will continue our English department "Inclusive Learning and Teaching" series of workshops with a conversation on the challenges of teaching sexually explicit and triggering material in the classroom. Her workshop, entitled, "Let's Talk About (Early Modern) Sex," will center on concerns and issues raised while teaching seventeenth- and eighteenth-century erotic literature to twenty-first century students. As the goal of the series is to give regular space for open discussion of inclusive curriculum in English studies, Parker's workshop will invite collaborative solutions to posed problems alongside suggested practices for engaging students in difficult, productive conversations about sexually obscene material. The workshop will take place on Friday, February 16th during the English Department's regularly scheduled meeting time (1:10-2:05 p.m., Wimberly 326). The workshop is designed for English department faculty but is free and open to the public. Interested participants can preview two key texts here: John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester's "The Imperfect Enjoyment" (1680?) and Aphra Behn's "The Disappointment" (1680).
