25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Can You Spell E-N-T-E-R-T-A-I-N-I-N-G?

The University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Department of Theatre Arts is proud to present its SummerStage production of the hilarious musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, this jubilant, touching show celebrates an eclectic group of six teenagers vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.  The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will show at 7:30 p.m. on June 21-22 and June 28-29 and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. on June 23 & 30 in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts, on the corner of 16th and Vine Streets.

At the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, students file into the auditorium in hopes that they will be the next champion of the very prestigious spelling bee.  Rona, the host and 3rd annual Putnam champion, introduces the students; William Barfee spells his words correctly with the help of his “magic” waggling foot; Olive, the new girl with the absent parents has a drive to prove herself; and Marcy, a very gifted young lady struggles with an unfortunate lisp.  Follow these tweens as they spell their way through a series of ridiculous words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.  With each contestant eliminated the pressure rises, and the children must learn what it means to really be a winner.
