Church and State

“Seriously Funny Comedy” about Guns, God and Politics

The University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Department of Theatre Arts is proud to present Church and State, by Jason Odell Williams. Church and State is a timely new play about politics, faith and the power of social media.  This “serious comedy” is a witty, thought-provoking look at the politics of religion and gun control, and the danger and power in telling the unfiltered truth.  Church and State will show at 7:30 p.m. on October 31-November 2 and Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. on November 3 in Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall at 1615 State Street, La Crosse.

Three days before his bid for re-election, in the wake of a school shooting in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, a Republican US senator makes an off-the-cuff comment to a blogger that gets leaked on Twitter, calling into question the senator’s stance on guns and God.  As his devoutly Christian wife and liberal Jewish campaign manager try to contain the damage, this look at how religion influences politics and how politics has become a religion is simultaneously funny, heartbreaking, and uplifting.
