English Department William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series

Against Critical Thinking: Saving the Humanities with Fitzpatrick’s Generous Thinking

Dr. Natalie Eschenbaum (Professor and Chair of English) will present "Against Critical Thinking: Saving the Humanities with Fitzpatrick’s Generous Thinking" from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday Oct. 25 in Wimberly 104.

Here is the abstract:

“Critical Thinking” is a one of an AAC&U-sanctioned student learning outcomes (SLO), and it is the SLO most frequently assessed in our General Education curriculum. We all teach our students how to think critically, and we all believe such thinking is valuable. In her new book, Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University (Johns Hopkins UP, 2019), Kathleen Fitzpatrick argues that critical thinking has harmed our relationship with the publics we serve. She explains that we (university faculty and administrators) have been trained to think critically, as opposed to generously. To heal the  rift with the public, we need to retrain ourselves to think generously, which Fitzpatrick describes as “a mode of engagement that emphasizes listening over speaking, community over individualism, collaboration over competition, and lingering with the ideas that are in front of us rather than continually pressing forward to where we want to go” (4). If higher education is a public good that helps to create a community-minded citizenry, then we should question the competitive individualism that defines our profession. In this colloquium, Dr. Natalie K. Eschenbaum will detail Fitzpatrick’s argument and offer practical advice on how to elevate “Generous Thinking” across the humanities at UWL.
