Policies and Support: Working with Disruptive Students

(Workshop part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificates Program)

Presenters: Andrew Ives, Student Life Specialist, Student Life Office, and Deb Hoskins, Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning

Primary audience for this session is Department Chairs and interested Equity Liaisons. Any instructor is welcome.

As departmental leaders, how can we best support a colleague who is dealing with a disruptive student? How might identities and contexts affect these situations? What policies are relevant, and what options do we have?  In this workshop, we will examine what "disruption" means, identify the relevant policies for addressing the situation, practice some methods of documenting the encounters, consider the respective roles of Student Affairs specialists, Chairs, Equity Liaisons, and Deans, understand how to respond when an instructor feels unsafe, and clarify our options at multiple stages in the process of dealing with a disruptive student. Expect scenarios to help you consider how to talk to both the student and your colleague.

Please register here.
