Trauma-Informed Care: Foundations Workshops

(Workshop part of the Diversity and Inclusion Certificates Program)

Part of the Inclusive Student Advocate Certificate

This session is 3 hours because it combines the Foundation of Resilience and Foundation of Empathy workshops.

Foundation of Resilience (prerequisite to Foundation of Empathy)

The child may not remember, but the body remembers. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), toxic stress and trauma can trigger stress responses that wreak havoc on brains and bodies, putting people at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, mental health challenges, and early death. Learn about building a foundation of common language and understanding about ACEs, trauma, and resilience at a community level. Includes a screening of the documentary Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope Resilience, which chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to build a community response to trauma and strengthen resilience. ?

Foundation of Empathy (must take Foundation of Resilience first)

Becoming a resilient and trauma-informed community is more than just something we do with students and colleagues or on campus.  It’s an intentional focus on who we are: in our families, neighborhoods, and greater community.  This session personalizes the Resilient and Trauma-Informed Community Framework by reflecting on our assumptions, beliefs, and emotions surrounding the relationships we have with others.
