Towards a Critical Public Health of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine

Addressing the Opportunities and Challenges

The use of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) - such as acupuncture, massage therapy, naturopathy, herbal medicine and meditation – remains substantial around the world. In response, health researchers have focused predominantly upon efficacy. While this initial focus is necessary, worthy and understandable it has nevertheless been undertaken largely at the expense of exploring other equally important questions related to TCIM use. In this talk, Professor Adams outlines the crucial need for a broader, critical public health approach to TCIM and why TCIM use raises a number of challenges and opportunities with regards to disease prevention, health promotion, treatment and support for those with chronic conditions and the health maintenance and well-being of the wider community.
