QTPOC Focus of Dr. Higgins Visit

Examining Issues for Queer/Trans People of Color (QTPOC)

Often when we talk about the LGBTQ+ community we are talking about white LGBTQ+ people.  Queer spaces are often safe places for white LGBTQ+ people only.  UWL and the Pride Center is no different. Doctor Jon Paul will speak to the needs of Queer and Trans people of color (QTPOC.) They will address how we can work to create spaces that allow QTPOC students, faculty, and staff to feel safe. This presentation is open to students, faculty, and staff and the La Crosse community.

Dr. Jon Paul Higgins completed their Educational Doctorate of Leadership in Justice from the University of Redlands where they wrote their dissertation on the first-year experiences of queer men of color in higher education.  While higher education is a passion area, they discuss much more than just issues of diversity. For them, diversity is recognizing the difference in a space while inclusion is about making sure everyone feels welcome in the space. Much of their writing and scholarly work has centered specifically on that, making sure the voices of marginalized people are heard because silence is in fact, violence.
