UWL Dumpster Diversion Program

UWL partners with Habitat for Humanity for campus move out

A new program at UWL aims to minimize waste and promote sustainable practices during campus move out events while enriching the surrounding local community.

In a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, on-campus students are encouraged to donate all usable unwanted items in the five designed pods stationed next to the dumpsters outside of UWL Residence Halls. The pods will be clearly labeled to direct where specific goods should be placed. 

The pods will be open daily from May 2nd - May 11th, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

By implementing an effective waste diversion strategy, the program seeks to reduce the environmental impact of discarded items and encourage responsible consumer and disposal habits among the campus community. Through the donation of usable goods, it aims to provide resources to non-profits and charitable organizations to assist their humanitarian efforts. 

Examples of usable items, include:

  • Furniture/Decor
  • Clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Electronics
  • Non-perishable, Unopened food
  • Cleaning products
  • Cookware
  • Etc.

*Non-acceptable items include university property.

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Wafer
  • Salvation Army
  • Catholic Charities Warming Center
  • Onalaska Food Basket
  • La Crosse Exchange
  • Family Promise
  • YWCA Reach
  • Coulee Cap Thrive - Prairie Du Chien
  • What I Need Now (WINN)
